Cat Food Recalls – The Important Things To Know
What’s a cat food recall, and what does it mean for you? TheUS Food and Drug Administration (FDA)regulates food and drug products — includingcat food— by testing regularly for contamination and illness-causing ingredients. These could include unapproved pesticides, contaminants like salmonella, orexcessive amounts of minerals such as calcium. When the FDA deems a product potentially dangerous, it issues alerts to let you know.
What kinds of pet food recalls are there?
The two major types of pet food recalls are voluntary and ordered. Most recalls are voluntary, meaning they originate from your pet food company. Occasionally, the FDA will step in to enforce a product recall.
Once the product has been recalled, the FDA and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) will issue an alert. That’s where this list comes in! Then the pet food company will correct the problem, and your local pet food stores will remove the food from their shelves until it’s safe to eat.
Can cat treats be recalled?
Much like your regular cat food,cat treatsmay be recalled if they’re found to contain unhealthy ingredients. Immediately stop feeding the treats to your cat if they get recalled.
What should you do if your cat food gets recalled?
When you see that your brand of cat food has been recalled, stop feeding it to your cat. Then read the details of the pet food recall, as it may not apply to your flavor or variety. If it does, try to find a new brand of cat food with some of the same ingredients. You want to avoid upsetting your cat’s stomach by suddenly changing its food.
Take the bag of recalled cat food back to the store. You should receive a full refund. Meanwhile, keep an eye out forsigns of illness in your cat. If you notice any issues, you may want to see your veterinarian.
